I usually have my 5th grade students begin the year with a word processing review and project. I love to have them create poems about themselves. In the past, I have given them a bio poem format to follow. This year, I wanted to give them more freedom to be creative. So I came up with an assignment I called Portrait Poem. I asked students to take a seflie and add a written "portrait" of themselves.
Using Google Classroom, I gave the students an assignment with a view only direction page and a blank doc to create their poem on. The direction page contained a Screencast-o-matic video, written directions, and an example poem. The direction page really allowed this to become a flipped lesson.
I also gave them a small sheet of paper with sentence starters on it. They were free to use these or create some of their own. I decided to give the planner on actual paper, so they could focus more on writing, rather than going between directions, planner, and their writing page. I printed the planners 4 on a page to save paper.
I am loving how their Portrait Poems are reflecting their personalities!
