Monster Hangman

Monster Hangman is a fun word game from Scholastic.  The game is just like regular hangman except with a monster and three difficulty levels to choose from.

This would be a great warm up or transition activity with a projector.

Big Wig Sub Shop

First and second grade students will enjoy practicing addition combinations or "math mountains" at the Big Wig Sub Shop.  Students choose a character and begin building sub sandwiches based around a number.  For instance, they are given the number, say 8, and they need to make addition problems  which equal that number, such as, 8 + 0, 1 + 7, 2 + 6, etc...

My students loved watching their character's "wig" grow and change as they proceeded in the game.

Brain Quest

I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and the Brain Quest display caught my eye.  I noticed they have a web site to go with their games and workbooks. The site contains games, a question of the day, and a few downloadable worksheets.

Students can play a 2-minute Brain Quest game.  The site has a game for 6-9 year olds and 9-13 year olds.  They also have  Hispanic America and Presidents games.

Teachers can view the question of the day or sign up to receive it via e-mail.  They also have a widget to place the question on your site or blog.

Super Science Fun

If you are looking for some great online science activities, head over to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis site.

Students will enjoy playing games while learning about dinosaurs, space, and other topics.

The activities can even be sorted by grade level to help younger students find age appropriate activities.

Math Man

If you like pac-man you will love Math Man (scroll to the lower part of the page).  Sheppard Software has many curricular activities for students.  My younger students love Math Man.  They can practice math skills and play an arcade game at the same time.  My students who struggle with basic math facts loved playing Math Man for practice.

Are You A Math Magician?

A fellow teacher and I were looking for a way for students to practice division facts online.  Enter Oswego schools Math Magician site!   Students can practice addition, subtraction, multiplcation, and division facts.  The Math Magic is also a great challenge.

Students are given one minute to solve 20 problems.  This allows for practice which is not overwhelming for students and could be done at a center.  Students can select mixed practice or focus on a specific number group.

 

Easy Online Sight Word Searches

 

These word searches are perfect for kindergarten and first grade students who are learning sigh words.  The puzzles will not overwhelm the students with words and would be a nice source of center time or at home practice.

The Crawford the Cat web site has three other games which would also be perfect for young students.

What is a Furble?

Furbles are a unique way to help students see how objects can be grouped by different attributes.  This is a simple online demo of the software.  It would be great for primary sorting and graphing lessons.

Start by selecting the number of furbles, their colors, shapes, and number of eyes.

 

You will then see your furbles randomly placed on the screen.

 

Click on the bar graph button and select color, shape, or eyes.

The furbles will group themselves and a graph will appear.  The graph can easily be changed to represent a different attribute or for graphing more than one attribute at a time.  

I think students would enjoy the Furbles, while learning several math concepts.

Lemonade Stand Activity

My students go crazy for real life simulation activities.  I have been looking for a lemonade stand activity for several years.  Each one I would find was somewhat limited or cost $$$.  I recently found this lemonade stand online activity.  My 2nd and 3rd graders love it!  We have also had some great discussions about profit/loss, the cost of starting a business and what things affect how much you sell.  I would like to develop some type of handout for the students to record their findings.
