I stumbled upon this blog today in a search for new lesson ideas. I love all of her ideas and I am sure this blog will become a new favorite of mine. I wish I had found it a few weeks ago and had my students make these fun shamrock stories.

Use this Java Applet to introduce or reinforce plotting points on a grid. It would be great with a projector or interactive white board.

Captions in MS Word

In helping teachers and students prepare for the NeSA test I have been helping with academic vocabulary.  One of the words is caption.  To see a real life model of how captions work I had the students insert a silly animal photo into a Word document and add a caption.  Word has a great Caption feature I had never used. 

Click on the picture you inserted in the document.

Go to Insert-Caption in the Menu bar.

Type in the caption for the image and click OK.

My fourth graders loved coming up with fun captions for the pictures and I believe they will easily remember what a caption is.

Storybird - Monster Counting Book

I had fun creating this simple counting book for young children on Storybird. I think the possibilities for creating online books are endless.  I plan on creating more soon!

Storybird is an awesome free online book maker.  I created a short story with illustrations on the site about alliterations.  You can view the stories full screen.  You can also invite others to collaborate on the same story.

I can see a variety of uses for this site. I had my first graders create addition sentences by "rolling" a die and writing down the numbers. They had a great time creating and solving the problems.

I could also see using the customize your die:
-vocabulary words on a die for review.
-alphabet letters
-word endings
-word families
-parts of a story (have students name the part they role. Character, plot, etc.)

Really the uses are endless.

I occasionally receive an e-mail from the Everyday Teaching Newsletter.  The last one contained some sample links to test prep web sites.  You can find actual practice tests for your students to take individually or they would be great review for a whole class.  Scroll down on the page to find the links.
